§ IICatfish Hatchery & Fingerlings

One of Malawi's most promising catfish hatcheries.

A4L produces catfish fingerlings for farmers and provides technical support to help them improve survival, growth, and profitability — backed by a first-generation selective breeding programme aimed at improving Malawian catfish.

§ IIIThe hatchery

Aquaponic for Life is developing one of Malawi's most promising catfish hatchery operations. We produce catfish fingerlings for farmers and provide technical support so they can improve survival, growth, and profitability.

Our work goes beyond ordinary fingerling production. We are also implementing a first-generation selective breeding programme aimed at improving the growth performance of Malawian catfish — which is known to grow inconsistently under many farm conditions.

Through our hatchery, we aim to increase access to quality fish seed, support farmers, and contribute to the growth of Malawi's aquaculture industry.

A standing claimWe are probably among the best catfish breeders in Malawi — earned by hands-on hatchery experience, continuous learning, and a refusal to settle for mediocre fingerlings.

§ IVSelective breeding programme

Improving Malawian catfish — one generation at a time.

Aquaponic for Life is implementing a first-generation selective breeding programme for Malawian catfish. The programme was developed in response to a major challenge faced by many farmers — local catfish often show poor or inconsistent growth performance.

Our goal is to select better-performing fish and build a stronger broodstock base over time. Through this work we aim to contribute to better fingerling quality, improved farmer productivity, and a more competitive catfish farming sector in Malawi.

Although the programme is still in its first generation, it represents an important step toward long-term genetic improvement of the species.

  1. 01

    Collect

Source broodstock from diverse farms across the region.

  2. 02

    Measure

Track growth, survival, conformation, feed conversion.

  3. 03

    Select

Retain top-performing animals for the next generation.

  4. 04

    Reproduce

    Controlled crosses under hatchery conditions.

  5. 05
