Why we breed Malawian catfish — and why it matters
A first-generation selective breeding programme is slow, unglamorous and absolutely necessary.
Almost every catfish farmer in Malawi will tell you the same thing — given two ponds, the same feed, the same labour, the same season, one will deliver and one will disappoint. We have lived inside that frustration for years. The fish are growing slowly, inconsistently, and below their genetic potential. The question is what to do about it.
Selective breeding is one of the oldest tools in agriculture and one of the least romantic. It is also one of the highest-leverage choices a hatchery can make. A breeding programme does not promise a miracle in year one; it promises a slow, compounding improvement in growth, survival and resilience over many generations. That is the wager A4L is making.
§ IThe problem, stated plainly
Malawian catfish — Clarias gariepinus, raised in earthen ponds across the country — too often show poor growth performance under farm conditions. The reasons are mixed: feed quality, water quality, management practice, stocking density. But behind those variables sits the genetics of the broodstock most farmers are buying from.
If a hatchery sells fingerlings from broodstock with mediocre growth performance, those fingerlings will inherit the mediocrity. Multiply that across tens of thousands of fingerlings sold each season, across many hatcheries, and you have a sector building on a foundation that is quietly settling underneath it.

§ IIWhat we are doing in Generation I
- 1.Sourcing broodstock from diverse farms across the region — variety is the raw material of selection.
- 2.Measuring growth, survival, conformation and feed conversion under controlled conditions.
- 3.Retaining only the top-performing animals as candidates for the next generation.
- 4.Running controlled crosses in the hatchery, tracking lineage.
- 5.Sharing what we learn with farmers — because the programme fails the moment it becomes private knowledge.
Generation I will not produce dramatic results. It rarely does. But the curve tightens with each generation that follows. By Generation IV or V, a farmer who buys A4L fingerlings should see a meaningful — and reproducible — uplift in growth performance.
§ IIIWhy this is a public good, not a trade secret
It would be commercially convenient to keep this work proprietary. But the maths of Malawian aquaculture argue the other way. A sector built on better fish helps every hatchery, every farmer, every district. We document our methods, we welcome partner researchers, and we publish what we can. The competitive moat is in execution and reputation — not in secrecy.
Selective breeding is patient work. It is also the surest way we know to lift the floor of what Malawian aquaculture is capable of. We are in the early stretches of a long arc; we plan to be in it for decades.
